US$65-MILLION ESCALATOR REPLACEMENT AT N.J. PATH STATION
A US$65-million replacement of three long escalators between the underground Exchange Place station and the surface is underway in Jersey City, New Jersey, with the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rapid transit system shutting down the station for three weekends, nj.com reports. The 25-year-old, 150-ft-long escalators were damaged in Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, subsequently malfunctioning and injuring six people in January 2013. Exchange Place was scheduled for shutdown on October 24-25, November 20-23 and December 4-7, with work on each escalator expected to take seven months. The targeted completion date is the latter part of 2022. The project, says the source, “isn’t going to be easy for riders or work crews.”
