NYC ESCALATOR OWNER TAKEN TO COURT OVER BREAKDOWNS
NYC safety inspectors have taken a building owner and manager into criminal court over a privately maintained escalator that has been essentially broken down for more than a year, The City reports. The source said the escalator, which leads to the platform at the 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue subway station, was in operation only 5% of the time in 2019. The owner of the building at 885 Third Avenue, under an agreement with the city, was responsible for maintaining the escalator. After receiving a complaint from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the NYC Department of Buildings referred the case to the city's legal department, which brought the misdemeanor charges in October 2019. According to records, the escalator, in use since 1985, began having problems in 2008. Officials recommended replacing the unit in 2011, but the owner opted for less-costly repairs. During a court hearing in January, a lawyer for the building owner said parts have been ordered but it will take until August to repair the unit. MTA estimates it won't be placed into service until September 30 at the earliest. The station handles about 65,000 riders per day.
