ELEVATOR WORK AT NYC SUBWAY STATION FAST-TRACKED
Accessibility upgrades including three new elevators have been fast-tracked by the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) at the 59th Street subway station in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Reporter reports. Installation of elevators — one from mezzanine to street and two from mezzanine to platform — is scheduled for completion in October, nearly one year ahead of the original target. An MTA spokesman observed current low ridership lends itself to projects getting done faster and cheaper. The project also includes Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades such as ADA-compliant bathrooms and curbs. Accelerating the elevator and other ADA-related work will cost about US$3.5 million, but that will be partially offset by savings of roughly US$2.65 million resulting from the shortened timeline.
